August 11, 2020, Debert, NS – There are many good reasons for a party, but the Cliffs of Fundy Geopark has a special reason to celebrate. On Wednesday August 5, Board members and volunteers gathered with 150 invited guests to applaud the UNESCO designation which was received just a few short weeks ago. The Cliffs of Fundy has joined an elite group of only 5 Geoparks in Canada and only 161 Global Geoparks in 44 countries world-wide. The event was held outdoors at beautiful Five Islands Lighthouse Park. Our guests enjoyed a beautiful sunny afternoon and a chance to celebrate, while adhering to all the COVID-19 precautions. Ottawa, ONT. (July 10, 2020) – The Canadian Commission for UNESCO and the Canadian Geoparks Network are pleased to announce that the Cliffs of Fundy, in Nova Scotia, and Discovery, in Newfoundland and Labrador, have been designated UNESCO Global Geoparks.

Geoparks are sites recognized by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, for their exceptional geological heritage. Being designated a Geopark means having the ability to mobilize local stakeholders to preserve unique geological sites and educate visitors about them. Geoparks also play a leading role in fostering high quality, sustainable tourism and contributing to the vitality of local economies.

As inhabitants of the coasts of the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark for more than 11,000 years, the Mi’kmaq were the area’s first geologists. With more than 40 geosites across 125 km, visitors can discover the Earth’s incredible natural history, the world’s highest tides, Canada’s oldest dinosaur fossils, and magnificent landscapes steeped in Mi’kmaq legends, tales and culture, Acadian traditions, and a dynamic arts and food culture.   Read More >>>

The Cliffs of Fundy Geopark, spanning the Fundy shore of Cumberland and Colchester counties from Apple River to Lower Truro, has officially been named a “UNESCO Global Geopark”. The prestigious designation was announced today at a meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Executive Board in Paris and is anticipated to be a catalyst for tourism growth in Nova Scotia.   Read More >>>

The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council is responsible for assessing revalidated and new UNESCO Global Geopark nominations, which are then submitted to UNESCO’s Executive Board for endorsement. At its fourth statutory meeting held in Lombok, Indonesia, from 31 August to 2 September 2019, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council assessed 13 new applications for UNESCO Global Geoparks, five previously deferred applications, one extension request larger than 10% of an existing UNESCO Global Geopark, resulting in a new application, and 38 revalidations.   Read More >>>

The Cliffs of Fundy Aspiring Geopark has cleared a major hurdle on the road to UNESCO designation.

The steering committee for the project has had its application accepted by the Canadian Geoparks Network, and has been approved for site evaluation by the Canadian National Committee for Geoparks this summer.   Read More >>>

Application Progress 
The Steering Committee of the Cliffs of Fundy Aspiring Geopark has submitted its application to the Canadian Geoparks Network, which will deliberate and determine if Cliffs of Fundy will proceed to the next step in becoming a Global Geopark.
