It is with sincere regret and unimaginable sadness that we inform you about some devastating news. As you may already know, Ukrainian International Airlines flight PS752 crashed in Iran shortly after takeoff from Tehran late last night. This morning, we learned that one of our dear and valued YAG members and a huge part of the CCUNESCO family, Mohammad Asadi-Lari, along with his sister Zeynab, were on that flight.
Mohammad was an incredible human being who worked tirelessly to advocate for peace, inclusive STEM education, equitable and just global health, meaningful youth engagement and social entrepreneurship and innovation. He was a global citizen, humanitarian, and entrepreneur who accomplished incredible feats before the age of 23.
Born in Iran, Mohammad grew up in the UK and Iran, visited over 20 countries, and finally settled in Canada 6 years ago, when he was in grade 12. His fascination for science started when he was in grade 9, in his Iranian high school’s chemistry lab.
Mohammad joined the Canadian Commission for UNESCO as a Youth Advisor in December 2016. Since joining the Commission, Mohammad made a profound impact on everyone he met. He never hesitated to support his peers and help them understand the immense power and capacity they have to change the world and improve the lives of marginalized people. He was frequently called upon to serve as an expert speaker on issues related to health, science, education, and youth engagement both in Canada and abroad.
Mohammad was a Co-Founder and Managing Director of STEM Fellowship, Co-Founder and Vice President of the Canadian Association of Physician Innovators and Entrepreneurs, Director of the Pre-Health Sciences Curriculum with NextGenU.org, VP Global Health for the University of Toronto's Medical Society, a Global Shaper with the World Economic Forum, a Campus Editor for LinkedIn, and an advisor to PeerBuds (block-chain educational startup in Silicon Valley), all while in the midst of completing an MD/PhD at the University of Toronto. He graduated from the Honours in Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences (CAPS) program from the University of British Columbia. Mohammad also led and/or advised youth engagement initiatives within the Canadian Red Cross, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Science World BC and the League of Innovators. He published research on nano chemistry, cancer immunology, neurosurgery, and neuroscience.
It was hard not to notice Mohammad's impact, intelligence, kindness, profound humanism, and deep sense of empathy. In recognition of his many achievements, Mohammad was selected as a TEDx speaker, 3M National Student Fellow, Governor General’s bronze academic medal recipient, UBC Faces of Today Leadership Award, Society for Scholarly Publishing Fellow, 2018 RBC Top 25 Immigrant Finalist and a winner of scientific Olympiad medals on a national and international level.
Beyond his incredible achievements, Mohammad had an ability to bring people together and inspire them to do and be better; -- better friends, family, professionals, academics, and citizens. His passing is not only an unimaginable loss for his immediate and extended family, including the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and the many institutions he was part of, but for the entire world. He will always remain in our hearts and his legacy and impact on the world will forever remain. It was a gift to spend time with and be in the presence of such a beautiful and remarkable person.

C'est avec un profond regret et une tristesse inimaginable que nous vous informons de nouvelles dévastatrices. Comme vous le savez peut-être déjà, le vol PS752 de la Ukrainian International Airlines s'est écrasé en Iran peu après son décollage de Téhéran, tard dans la nuit d'hier. Ce matin, nous avons appris qu'un de nos chers et estimés membres du Groupe consultatif jeunesse et un membre important de la grande famille de la CCUNESCO, Mohammad Asadi-Lari, ainsi que sa sœur Zeynab, étaient à bord de ce vol.
Mohammad était un être humain exceptionnel qui a travaillé sans relâche pour défendre la paix, l'éducation inclusive en matière de STIM, une santé mondiale équitable et juste, l'engagement significatif des jeunes, l'entrepreneuriat et l'innovation sociale. Il était un citoyen du monde, altruiste et bâtisseur. Il a accompli des exploits incroyables avant l'âge de 23 ans.
Né en Iran, Mohammad a grandi au Royaume-Uni et en Iran, a visité plus de 20 pays et s'est finalement installé au Canada il y a six ans, alors qu'il était en 12e année. Sa fascination pour les sciences a commencé lorsqu'il était en 9e année, dans le laboratoire de chimie de son école secondaire iranienne.
Mohammad s'est joint à la Commission canadienne pour l'UNESCO à titre de conseiller jeunesse en décembre 2016. Depuis son arrivée à la Commission, Mohammad a eu un impact profond sur toutes les personnes qu'il a rencontrées. Il n'a jamais hésité à soutenir ses pairs, à les aider à comprendre l'immense pouvoir et leur capacité à changer le monde et à améliorer la vie des personnes marginalisées. Il a souvent été appelé à agir comme conférencier expert sur des questions liées à la santé, à la science, à l'éducation et à l'engagement des jeunes, tant au Canada qu'à l'étranger.
Mohammad a été cofondateur et directeur général de STEM Fellowship, cofondateur et vice-président de l'Association canadienne des médecins innovateurs et entrepreneurs, directeur du programme d'études en sciences de la santé de NextGenU.org, vice-président de la santé mondiale pour la Société médicale de l'Université de Toronto, « façonneur » mondial (Global Shaper) pour le Forum économique mondial, rédacteur de campus pour LinkedIn, et conseiller pour PeerBuds (démarrage d'une chaîne d'éducation en bloc à Silicon Valley). Il complétait en parallèle un diplôme de MD/PhD à l'Université de Toronto et détenait un diplôme du programme spécialisé en sciences cellulaires, anatomiques et physiologiques (CAPS) de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Mohammad a également dirigé des initiatives d'engagement des jeunes au sein de la Croix-Rouge canadienne, des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada, de Science World BC et de la League of Innovators. Il a publié des recherches sur la nanochimie, l'immunologie du cancer, la neurochirurgie et les neurosciences.
Il était difficile de ne pas remarquer l'impact, l'intelligence, la gentillesse, l'humanisme et le sens profond de l'empathie de Mohammad. En reconnaissance de ses nombreuses réalisations, Mohammad a été choisi comme conférencier TEDx, boursier étudiant national 3M, récipiendaire de la médaille de bronze du Gouverneur général pour les études universitaires, lauréat du prix de leadership Faces of Today de l'UBC, membre de la Society for Scholarly Publishing, finaliste du Top 25 des immigrants RBC 2018 et gagnant de médailles aux Olympiades scientifiques à l'échelle nationale et à l’international.
Au-delà de ses incroyables réalisations, Mohammad avait la capacité de rassembler les gens et de les inspirer à faire plus et à être meilleurs ; meilleurs amis, membres de la famille, professionnels, universitaires et citoyens. Son décès est une perte inimaginable non seulement pour sa famille immédiate et élargie, y compris pour la Commission canadienne pour l'UNESCO et les nombreuses institutions dont il faisait partie, mais aussi pour le monde entier. Il restera toujours dans nos cœurs, et son héritage et son impact sur le monde resteront à jamais. C'était un véritable cadeau de pouvoir passer du temps et d’être en présence d'une personne aussi belle et remarquable.
